Who We Are

Mission: To strengthen communities through helping individuals and families achieve greater economic security.

The Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA) is a nonprofit organization that works to empower individuals and families in the region by providing essential services aimed at reducing poverty and improving quality of life. NMCAA serves the 10-county region in northwest Michigan, focusing on helping low-income individuals and families become self-sufficient and achieve economic stability.

What We Do

The agency offers a wide range of programs and services designed to meet the immediate needs of residents and help them build long-term success. These services include:

  1. Emergency Assistance: NMCAA provides support for individuals facing financial hardships, including help with rent, food, and other emergency needs.
  2. Housing Assistance: The agency offers programs to prevent homelessness, including rental assistance, home repairs, weatherization services, and resources to help individuals secure stable housing.
  3. Nutrition Programs: NMCAA operates various food assistance programs, including food pantries, meal services, and senior nutrition programs, to ensure that families and seniors have access to healthy food.
  4. Head Start and Early Childhood Education: Through early childhood education programs, including Head Start, NMCAA supports young children and their families by offering educational opportunities, health services, and resources to promote school readiness.
  5. Financial Counseling and Education: NMCAA provides financial literacy classes, budgeting assistance, and credit counseling to help individuals manage their finances and work toward long-term financial stability.
  6. Housing and Energy Efficiency Services: NMCAA dedicates itself to enhancing the quality of life for community members by offering targeted programs that address housing stability and energy efficiency. These programs alleviate the burden of high utility costs as well as unsafe housing conditions, particularly for low-income households.
