Volunteer: Tuesday ToolmenOur Tuesday Toolmen are a small group of volunteers that work to help keep seniors safe in their homes. The Tuesday Toolmen focus on home safety repairs for our low-income neighbors. These repairs may include installing smoke detectors, building ramps, working on minor plumbing, installing grab bars and handrails, and more. We are looking for volunteers who can give time on Tuesdays within any of our 9 counties including Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Missaukee, or Wexford. You will not be out there alone! You will be teamed with our existing Toolmen to get these jobs done for our local seniors. We are flexible with timing! We do require a background check. We are looking for therapists who want to join our new program, called Therapy Corps, to provide free mental health services to pediatric populations in our area who could otherwise not afford this critical service. Therapy Corps, which is part of the Northwest CHIR’s Behavioral Health Initiative, is partnering with United Way of Northwest Michigan to connect trained therapists with underserved children, youth and families in need of pediatric behavioral health services. Your Qualifications: Desire to work with pediatric populations and their families in our area High-speed internet connection Fully licensed or limited licensed therapist able to provide therapeutic services in the state of Michigan Ability to provide at least one therapy session per week through Therapy Corps First steps: Register as a volunteer in our Volunteer Center, providing your legal name and birthdate so we can perform a background check. Volunteer: Open Call: Volunteers for New Children's/Veteran Dental ClinicThere is a new dental training facility opening in Traverse City called United We Smile, serving people with developmental and cognitive impairments, pregnant women, children, and veterans! This innovative healthcare delivery model uses dental interns from U of M School of Dentistry to provide free dental services while local dentists (credentialed as Adjunct Faculty under UMSOD) oversee the students doing the procedures. United Way staff and dental assisting interns from NMC DA School will provide auxiliary support. In addition to patients being seen in the new 8 chair dental clinic, patients can attend a variety of onsite United Way support groups, parenting classes, certifications, hearing and vision screenings, etc.
Mondays-Thursdays will be free for children, pregnant women, and those with special needs, targeting families 212% poverty and under.
Fridays will be free for veterans, targeting folks 300% poverty and under (continuing our Victors for Veterans program entering its 11th year!!!). They’re the essential items needed to begin a new life in a new home. We have families and individuals moving into permanent, supportive housing across the region; some of them will have a safe place to lay their head for the first time! With your help, these families can focus on what’s most important: meals on the table, shoes on their feet, and transportation to get to work.
