Old Town Playhouse has over 50 performances on our MainStage each season (September to May), and we need concessions volunteers for every one. Concessions volunteers arrive 75 minutes prior to the performance, set up displays, and sell snacks, candy, soda, water, and coffee for cash or credit one hour before the performance and during intermission. You can watch most of the performance for which you volunteer, and we'll give you a voucher for a free rush ticket to another performance as well. You'll need to be able to stand at our concessions window, do some light lifting (water bottles and soda cans), make change, and run a credit card terminal. We'll ask you to arrive 20 minutes early for your first shift for a short training session. PoWeR! Book Bags distributes literacy materials as well as small smart toys to encourage children to express themselves with language and storytelling. Included in our bags for children ages three and up: finger puppets, crayons, bookmark, composition notebook, and create-your-own-story booklets.

Our adorable finger puppets come in several different unique characters and animals. They come to us with the heads stuffed. To ensure the cotton stuffing does not come out, we tie little "bowties" around the necks before packing and distributing them. We supply yarn for this project as well as instructions how to properly tie them off. 

This is the perfect project to complete at home or at a work bee with friends.

We could use your help as we label all of our books with a "This book belongs to_____________" sticker, inviting children to join the ranks of readers by taking ownership of their chosen books! This is a project that you can complete at our Suttons Bay site or take home to do on your own schedule and return in good time. This is also a great activity to do as a group. 

If you would like to come in to our site individually, or as a group, please email claire@powerbookbags.org to schedule a time. Generally volunteers spend up to two hours at our site stickering books. A handful of volunteers can get quite a few boxes done in that time.

PoWeR! Book Bags distributes literacy materials to children and families throughout Northwest Michigan in hand-sewn bags. One of the items included in our bag for children ages 3 and up are the create-your-own-story booklets. 

These booklets are hand-assembled by taking four pieces of copy paper with a sheet of color paper as the cover, folding the stack in half and stapling it down the middle. 

This is a project that can easily be done from home or can make for a great work bee activity.

Our Tuesday Toolmen are a small group of volunteers that work to help keep seniors safe in their homes. The Tuesday Toolmen focus on home safety repairs for our low-income neighbors. These repairs may include installing smoke detectors, building ramps, working on minor plumbing, installing grab bars and handrails, and more.

We are looking for volunteers who can give time on Tuesdays within any of our 9 counties including Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Leelanau, Missaukee, or Wexford. You will not be out there alone! You will be teamed with our existing Toolmen to get these jobs done for our local seniors. We are flexible with timing!

We do require a background check. 

Blind client needs a ride from Williamsburg to Traverse City, to get to and from work. Address specifics will be given after signing up.

At Inland Seas we operate a year-round facility that serves as the Inland Seas Education Center and our office space.

In this center we have 4 freshwater aquariums that are home to fish, crayfish, and a turtle. We are seeking a mindful individual who is interested in maintaining these features as a part of our educational offerings.

There is no set schedule. The tanks are cleaned once every week, with monthly filtration changes. You are welcome to come in that frequently, or less so, if that works better for you. The tanks will be cleaned regardless, we are just looking for some help!

Our Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) program is offered to middle school and high school students during the months of May, June, September, and October. 

For the program, we use a kit of PVC pipes and Pelican ROV motors/propellors. In total there are seven kits. We are seeking a team who is interested in checking the electrical connections of all switches and making sure they are tight/in working order!

Do you want to make a difference in the lives of children and families in our region? We are looking for therapists who want to join our new program, called Therapy Corps, to provide free mental health services to pediatric populations in our area who could otherwise not afford this critical service. Therapy Corps, which is part of the Northwest CHIR’s Behavioral Health Initiative, is partnering with United Way of Northwest Michigan to connect trained therapists with underserved children, youth and families in need of pediatric behavioral health services.

Our teens need and deserve one-on-one attention; someone to listen to, interact and take an interest in their lives. Inland Seas Education Association has a mission of fostering Great Lakes stewardship, curiosity, and passion. We accomplish this mission through a variety of hands-on science programs that are supported by volunteer teams. Each year, through the Adopt-a-Beach program, thousands of volunteers work to keep the Great Lakes shorelines healthy by removing litter from our beaches and collecting important data.

The Alliance for the Great Lakes is a nonpartisan nonprofit working across the Great Lakes region to protect our most precious resource: the fresh, clean, and natural waters of the Great Lakes. We are active in advocacy, volunteering, education, and research. One of the ways to advance our efforts is by becoming an Alliance Ambassador.  

Alliance Ambassadors 

We give Ambassadors training about the Great Lakes and how best to advocate to protect them. Virtual meetings are held throughout the year where Ambassadors can learn from experts about Great Lakes topics like plastic pollution, invasive species, and water infrastructure. We also help Ambassadors build skills like public speaking and tabling. 

As an Ambassador, you will have many opportunities to take action for the lakes: 

Give presentations to community, youth, and business groups about the Great Lakes and the threats they face 

Table at community events to raise awareness about the Great Lakes and the Alliance 

Share information and spread awareness on social media 

And more! 

The Alliance is here to support you every step of the way. We provide all needed supplies and event preparation and reimburse for event costs, such as parking. We need help decorating bags

Join us for a walk with one of our Kidney Companions who either needs a kidney transplant, or recently received a kidney transplant. We will have an existing, vetted adult volunteer with you as well. This will be great for a small group of 2-3 people!

The walk is intended to build a healthy habit and to socialize.

We’re all pulling together to achieve our common mission - protecting and stewarding the regions natural, scenic and iconic farmlands for all future generations and all of our projects require a tremendous amount of behind the scenes work right here in our offices on N Long Lake Rd. The integrity of the conservancy is paramount to our success in protecting land, and excellence in relationship management, data entry, database management and other office administration tasks is key.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:

The duties of our office administration volunteers vary by the needs of the conservancy, and your strengths as a volunteer. Tasks include, but are not limited to:

All office administration tasks occur at our main office at 3860 N Long Lake Rd, Suite D. A small number of projects may be able to be completed remotely.

QUALIFICATIONS

As our office tasks vary widely, there are no required skills or qualifications, though the following will help with many of our tasks:

TIME COMMITMENT

We believe that any time you choose to contribute to our mission through office work is invaluable, and you may volunteer as much as your schedule allows. That said, regularly scheduled, weekly time slots work best for scheduling the office resources you’ll need to be successful including a desk, phone and computer. We will work with you on scheduling this time.

TRAINING

All office volunteers will receive an overview of the conservancy, and training specific to the projects they take on. You will be paired with an experienced staff member to provide oversight, training and assistance throughout your volunteering!

Volunteering at BARC's Resale Shop will include but are not limited to the following tasks:

“Every person, every time” is the mission that guides Hospice of Michigan in the service of our patients and their families. Volunteers play an integral role in helping us complete that mission. We are currently seeking companionship volunteers with weekday availability to visit hospice patients in the Northern Michigan service area. Visits occur where the patient lives, whether it be at home, or in a nursing or assisted living facility. As a companionship volunteer, there is no hands-on physical care; rather, you spend time visiting, reminiscing, reading, watching movies, playing music or games, or simply being a presence for someone in need.

To get started, please submit an online application. An interview and additional documentation (TB test, background check, and fingerprinting) will follow. Volunteers then complete an orientation and have opportunities for continued education and networking with other volunteers.

Please consider our “One Year” guidelines: Volunteers are asked to make a one year commitment to the program, and if you have recently lost a loved one, please take one year for yourself to heal before giving your time as a volunteer.

Munson Manor helps people coping with the crisis of a seriously ill or injured loved one in the hospital. Located next to Munson Medical Center at 1220 Medical Campus Dr., Munson Manor accommodates up to 30 guest families in a beautifully renovated turn-of-the-century cottage. As a non-profit organization, Munson Manor relies on community volunteers to meet the many needs of the families who stay here. One way you can volunteer at Munson Manor is through our Family Meal Program.

The Family Dinner Program relies on volunteers to help supply dinners for 20-25 people from Sunday-Thursday. Individuals and groups are asked to make a comforting meal for people who are currently away from home, family, and friends during a stressful time in their lives. 

Munson Manor has a well stocked kitchen available, so if you can cook, you are invited to share your culinary talents. You would need to bring all the food that you intend to cook, but can rely on the Manor to have the kitchen tools, plates, etc and spices to help make your meal a crowd-pleaser. Recommended menus include soups, salads, stews, pasta dishes like lasagna or spaghetti and meatballs, casseroles, etc.
