Who We Are

Mission: To provide high-quality environmental education and training that fosters a deep understanding of the natural world and inspires individuals to engage in responsible stewardship of the environment.

Au Sable Institute is an environmental education organization that was founded in 1979. It was established to provide a space where individuals, particularly students, could receive high-quality environmental science education from a Christian perspective. The institute is named after Au Sable River in Michigan, a river known for its natural beauty, which embodies the institute’s mission of connecting people with the environment and fostering a sense of responsibility for its care.

Founded by a group of Christian scientists and educators, the institute sought to address the growing environmental challenges of the time and to integrate faith with environmental stewardship. It offers a range of academic programs focused on environmental science, ecology, and sustainability, blending rigorous scientific inquiry with a commitment to ethical care for the planet.

What We Do

Au Sable Institute operates several campuses, including locations in Michigan, Washington State, and India, providing students with immersive field experiences in diverse ecosystems. The courses are designed to engage students directly with nature through field studies, research projects, and hands-on activities, all while emphasizing Christian principles of stewardship.

Over the years, the institute has expanded its reach by offering graduate and undergraduate courses in collaboration with universities, allowing students to earn credits while gaining practical experience in environmental science. Additionally, the institute offers workshops, research programs, and community outreach initiatives aimed at raising awareness and encouraging sustainable practices.

Today, Au Sable Institute continues to be a leader in integrating environmental science education with faith-based stewardship. Its commitment to fostering informed, responsible environmental leaders who can make a positive impact in both local and global communities remains central to its mission. The institute is widely recognized for its contribution to environmental education and its dedication to inspiring future generations to care for the natural world.
